Genre Decision: Music Mag Task

This is an example of a magazine cover featuring one of my chosen genres of music which I may use, in this case Daft Punk who are a techno music group. This magazine has rather bright colours being reflected off the costumes as a conscious choice and also a glowing border around other parts of the magazine, indicative of the rave and club scene that their music is familiarly associated with.

Prospectus Example

Prospectus

A very warm welcome to Deyes High School. I hope this prospectus will provide an overall picture of our impressive educational opportunities and a glimpse of life at the school.

At Deyes High we are proud of our school, the students and their achievements. We pride ourselves on good relationships that exist at all levels and which are based on trust, openness, teamwork and respect. There is a "buzz" of enthusiasm about the place. People are curious and keen to try out new ideas. There is a strong sense of optimism and pride in the school's successes and in our capacity to develop and improve. We have high expectations and a strong sense of achievement. It is a great privilege for me to be a Headteacher of a school which has a strong association with success.

Our most valuable asset is our people. We have talented staff who work as a cohesive team putting successful learning at our core. As a result the school seeks to maintain its status as an extremely popular school by setting out to excel in everything we do. We want all of our students to flourish and fulfil their potential. We set challenging targets for everyone and we have seen improved results over a number of years. We have been awarded for achieving some of the best GCSE results, including English and Mathematics in the country. The school is one of the largest High Schools in Sefton with 1440 students including 300 in the sixth form. In September 2006 we became a Specialist Science College, which has led to even higher standards, more improved teaching and learning and updated accommodation.
The above is a prospectus which would be useful to have an example of for my Newsletter.

Preliminary task: Ideology

For my Ideology, to be shown on my preliminay task of a school newsletter, I will show the more, what I believe, positive aspects of the school, such as the use of modern equipment and the high qualification success rates of the school. To demonstrate this I will use results from previous years and images showing the students in the school performing the relevant tasks, such as performing a science experiment or playing sports.

Ideology

Ideology is the set of idea and goals behind any piece of media, ie a newsletter, film, tv show etc. The ideology is what the piece of media wishes to convey and demonstrate to the audience.

Music Mag Questionnaire

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEY3a3pCS281Z1UyZXNTaDN1dzQwMVE6MQ
As research for my magazine task I have created a questionnaire for people to fill in so as to get an idea as to what sort of content people look for in a music magazine and to determine what sort of age range are interested in purchasing a music magazine.

Newsletter Analysis

The school newsletter has a rather obvious overuse of text; the text is presented with little creativity or thought put into its placement. This also includes the front cover, which should be used to catch attention on a regular magazine while here the page is dominated by walls of text rather than an image.
The text choice used is also rather bland and uninteresting, while the text needs to be uniform and at least semi-formal, the text chosen is very bland and uninteresting which bores the reader and makes people uninterested in continuing to read it.
A bigger problem however is the lack of a focused audience; some segments seem aimed at the pupils of the school, others at parents and governors and even more parts are aimed seemingly at children. These segments have no proper layout and all run together, which seems like the newsletter has a lack of any kind of focus for its audience rather than simply choosing one and going with that, it tries to cover all bases but results in the newsletter seeming scattered and incomplete.
Overall the newsletter has a very flawed design overall and could have benefitted for a more concrete layout rather than trying to appeal to every possible reader at once, like picking whether to make it for pupils or family before starting.

Magazine Genre

For my music magazine I have to genres decided on what to base it on; the first genre and my first choice is house or techno music, from artists such as Daft Punk, however this is a rather niche market and so I have another genre decided on, in this case Indie Music, just in case I can't produce significant materials to work ith for m first choice.
